Formed from the ashes of Manwich, Mona Lisa Overdive first got together in the fall of '87. The brothers Jeff & Adam Smith... along with Peter Aaron and William Weber, wanted to form a band that was sheer volume... and total improv. To further set themselves apart from other groups... they played over top of the Zamfir ("The Master of the Pan Flute") cassette "Sârbă bătrânească", which they bought at a truckstop on the way to Columbus for an unsuccessful rehearsal. Their first gig came when they invited themselves onto the bill of a "Wolverton Brothers / Gibson Brothers" show at Apollo's in Columbus (considering Jeff and Adam were related, it seemed to stick with the "brother" theme of the show). Two and a half songs into the set, they were asked to stop... and leave the venue immediately. Vowing never to play in their hometown of Cincinnati, they hit the road. "MLO" continued this routine of showing up and inviting themselves onto the bills of others for 6 more shows. Feeling their mission was complete... they disbanding 1 1/2 months after forming.
